IB Biology - Today we started with cleaning this room to reduce the chances of contagion being spread. Then we got into some more in depth discussion of what to do about climate change, but while our hearts are all in a unified direction, I heard many different ideas about how to solve these issues. Tonight, find a scholarly solution (it would probably need to be multifaceted) to global climate change. Summarize and include a citation. In addition, I need you to complete the activity found on page 238. You can graph it by hand or by google sheets. It will be turned in as well. Honors Biology - Today we started by talking about common ways to avoid contracting viruses such as a cold, influenza, or COVID-19. We then heard a story that allowed us to set some ground rules for how to proceed through sexual education. Lastly we listed some of our questions and concerns that we'll need to address and be sensitive about in our unit. I hope that as we work our way through this unit, you make sure to discuss topics with your parents. We'll discuss the facts surrounding the topics, but you and your parents will decide what these facts mean for your choices. Maybe tonight is a good night for some discussion with them? Tuesday IB Biology - Tonight I want you to look at the sheets I gave you today. What do you recognize, what do you not? Biochemically what is going on in each diagram? What is the formula for each of these processes. Everything can be written as annotation on the sheets I gave you. Not just relationships with boy or girl friends, but with all friends and family. By the end of the class we composed a list of qualities that we would love to have in our relationships. You ranked yourself on this list (0=not, 1=somewhat, and 2=definitely). Tonight you need for a friend to rank you, and for an important adult(parent, etc.) to rank you. At the bottom of your page I would like you to analyze what they said about you. Are their places where you could be doing better? Tell me what you would like to improve on and why. Wednesday IB Biology - So today we spent a chunk of our time reviewing photosynthesis and cellular respiration. The big ideas that we should have taken from this is that they are reciprocal reactions, reactions happen one step at a time, oxidation and reduction (OIL RIG)are a transfer of electrons that create transitions, and that energy is needed for change to occur. The reason we did this review is because it is so vital to building a proper mesocosm. So, for the mesocosm, you must complete the following analysis before you get a jar to work with. 1) You should describe your soil structure. This should include grain size, composition, nutrient cycling, drainage, etc. 2) You should describe the type and quantity of plant you will be using to regulate CO2 3) You should describe the type and quantity of animals you will be using to regulate O2 4) Include an explanation of how this will work as a system. You must be detailed! 5) You should include a detailed sketch of your proposed mesocosm. Use IB drawing rules and labels. You may want o look at the resources posted yesterday. You can bring any materials that you want starting tomorrow. This was really good at look at how no one is perfect and that we all have room for growth. Now that we know that this isn't just about biology we then jumped back into the science of the biology by looking at the anatomy and physiology of the body by looking at the reproductive system of the opposite gender. You had a chance to develop questions about these systems. Tonight I want you to finish the learning by looking at your gender's reproductive system. Add the notes to the entry we worked on today. Thursday IB Biology - You are probably super happy to know that your final Unit 4 exam will be given next Wednesday. So, let’s discuss margin of error for grading purposes on the mesocosm. We'll be using the 5% rule. Here's how you will score this: 8=3+ weeks of 5% 7=3 weeks of 5% 6=2 weeks of 5% 4=1 week of 5% 3=0 weeks By Monday you will need to provide me with a DETAILED drawing and description of your plan. You only need one plan for you and your partner, but make sure you have an explanation that tells and shows me how you will maintain a balanced environment. BUT you can start bringing in materials tomorrow! OHHHHH!!! David Hernandez had a really good point that he learned through his ESS IA, soil will make the CO2 rise rapidly because their are microbes consuming dead organic material. Way to go Karen, Yusur, and Karrar! The rest of the day you spent with your partner designing your mesocosm that will be started on Monday. Remember, you need to have a detailed drawing (IB standards) and a written rationale for every component of the mesocosm. You will not be given a jar until that is completed. Oh, and DO NOT wait to put this together on Monday. There won't be enough time to do that and build it. Honors Biology - Today you spent a chunk of your time discussing the "Wheel of Power" in relationships and how to navigate relationships using our foundational values. It should be pretty clear that it isn't just about biology! This weekend, on the left hand side of your entry from today I want you to identify your top 3 trust "people". This should include an adult, and friends, but you can have really anyone. Once you list them on the left and WHY you trust them, please make sure you tell them how much you trust them. Monday IB Biology - So today we went over basic chemistry and walked that right into the cycling of carbon within a system. You then applied that to your ecosystem that you are creating a VR tour for. Your job is to not only complete this drawing for tomorrow, but to then apply what you drew to your VR tour which we will check tomorrow. When you are ready for tomorrow you should have 8 stops in your VR tour: 1 an introduction, at least 1 which shows us your "players", 3 trophic levels represented (must include producers), and at least 3 energy transfers (fluxes). Get a four by completing specific (adaptive) immunity. How to get a 5-6: Include the innate immune system (min. 2 components) How to get a 7-8: Cell mediation or/and Humoral response. Secondary infection. OR Vaccine use Tuesday IB Biology - First we discussed what we could do with the elementary kids. Next, you watched this video to point out the importance of the unsung heroes of ecosystems. Earn a 3-4 if you have the basics (Look back at what I have asked) Earn a 5-6 by making it a 3-4 first but also including: abiotic/temp/water/shelter for animals/elevation data OR a minimum of 2 HNOPS cycles. Earn a 7-8 by making it like a 5-6 but also adding at least 3 negative human affects, and any positives. Honors Biology - Today we reviewed our initial questions from this immune system mini-unit. This led us to a new entry, "How Does the Immune System Work With Medications?" We know the answer of how antibiotics work, but this question lead us to the question of the use of vaccines and how they work. Please make sure to have the evaluation ready to be reviewed tomorrow. Then we worked on an energy transfer question, and then a food web question on 219. Bake Ballew pointed out some interesting points in the DBQ on page 219. We'll discuss those odd points we'll discuss tomorrow. We then returned to our Addie case study and realized that Addie's infection falls into the bacterial side and you then wrote down a model of what he body might be doing that would cause these responses from the body, and questions that you felt were necessary to address to create a complete model. Ultimately, we realized that we hadn't addressed the immune system really at all. So, first things first is to find out what kinds of cells are involved in any immune response. Friday IB Biology - SO today we took a look at your virtual tours which will be completed next week. We then went in depth into looking at how prior knowledge supports how we respond to our DBQ questions. We need to think deeply to answer these well! Honors Biology - This week we have pieced together the rise of mammals, and then the rise of modern homo sapien, but what about the other hominids? What happened to them? You watched a small section of this movie (https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/video/great-human-odyssey/) starting at minute 50, and you probably got some ideas. On the left hand side of the entry we did today I want you to decide what caused the extinction of Neanderthal and Denisovan hominids. Use all of the things you learned about from yesterday and what you picked up today. Your explanation should include CLIMATE, as well as homo sapien traits as factors. Also, do not forget that grades get posted tomorrow and if you do not have your parent input you will receive a zero. Lastly, do not forget that there is a case study test on evolution tomorrow. You will be given a human population to work with this time. Please review the foundational ideas of evolution (variation, time, inheritance, selection, etc.) and speciation. OH, and you should remind yourself about Alleles and how those play out in genotypes. In other words, do you remember what Aa means, or if a trait is autosomal recessive. IB Biology - Animal Classification Yearbook project: Use the taxa listed below: Domain, Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species. This work should be completed on the backside of criteria sheet I gave you today and should be completed by tomorrow. We'll be using these then. In addition, I want you to know that we will be taking a quiz on chapter 5 material on Wednesday (maybe Thursday), and Later this week we will be reviewing the Evaluation section of your IA, please do NOT slack! Honors Biology - So today we took some time to make sure we clarify what our understanding of natural selection and evolution are at this point in time. We then watched the ending of the Addie story. Lastly, we discussed your homework which was how do we/biologists define speciation (the point when 2 populations become distinctly different). We decided that the best definition of this is "When two populations from the same ancestor do not, or will not, reproduce with each other." This is a common, but not always perfect definition. We can work with it though. So how does it happen? Well, it happens due to isolation. There are three ways isolation happens between two populations: behaviorally, temporally, or geographically. Your job tonight is two parts: 1) Look up a definition for these three types of isolation and jot them down next to the note from today. 2) You will start a new entry titled, "Juncos of UCSD and Laguna Mountains, are they different species?" Underneath the title on the right side, please search for "Juncos of UCSD" and then "Juncos of the Laguna Mountains" and make detailed observations of the differences in their physical appearance (coloration, patterns, size, etc.) Tuesday IB Biology - SO today we got a chance to see your animals and spent a chunk of time trying to sort them out into the best "yearbook" pages we can. You probably realize that it was really quite difficult to make this happen. The taxa certainly helped, but Kate said at one point, just because they look similar does not mean they are related. Another way to organize organisms is to look at their common ancestry and that is what you have been doing for homework for the last few days. Tomorrow you will be coming in and constructing a cladogram for your organism along with others so you need to know how it works. This is why I want you to complete the DBQ on 273. While we aren't totally done with our evolution and natural selection concepts, I'm going to ask you today to work on the beginning of our next (and final) unit on ecology. Today you will self-organizer into groups of 3-5 people. Do NOT be less than 3 people, and take in "lost souls" who have not found a group. Your task today is to produce a written document that describes the best way to: 1) Describe the components of the environment (biotic and abiotic) of Granite Hills High School 2) Provides a system for organizing the various components of GHHS. You will probably need to walk around campus a bit to see what is there and then brainstorm a succinct way of describing what you see. You will be scored on how efficiently (simple but effective)you can do this without missing anything. For example, If I were describing my home, I might start with a simple list of everything I see (biotic and abiotic) Ex. Broken couch, house with no roof, rain coming in, cockroaches, rats, me, weeds, mold, etc. But then, how could I classify these components into groups that would help me describe the relationship between these components? Honors Biology - So this last week we discovered that there is a natural evolutionary process that could be in play in our case study on Addie. Then we looked at the video from last night and discussed the positive and negative qualities of the experiment. Then I forgot to give you the short quiz. Tonight, using the four colors we used today I want you to make a graphic organizer (a picture that shows relationships) of the four concepts that contribute to evolution. This should be a graphical representation on the left side of your entry from today. It should use color throughout. It should make sense. Ex. Time might surround all of the other three concepts. Or maybe you use a circular structure of all four. Maybe it's a pyramid with one of the qualities at the base. Regardless, it MUST communicate the relationship between the concepts. We then went into working on your fastener classification system. You will be finishing this tomorrow. Tonight you should be polishing your IA data, accounting for uncertainty in your measurements, and running a test of validity. This is the only thing you must do tonight. Please do it as we will be working on your evaluations on Monday! Your fastener naming system will continue tomorrow, but know that it should have a naming system that will individually distinguish each fastener. You could place the dichotomous key on one side, and maye the fastener with its name on the back. As you work on each differentiating factor for grouping, you should be making a name for each group. INVESTIGATION 1: How many doses of an antibiotic would it take to eliminate 1,000,000 bacteria if it was 90% effective?

SO today we reviewed definitions for the evolutionary concepts and your discussion revealed that maybe were still not solid on the concepts. I think that if we step out of the organization of the book and look to simplify the concepts you might be able to say evolution boils down to the following four factors: TIME, or the idea that these changes can happen successfully as long as the generational time is quick enough to produce new offspring with new traits. VARIATION, or the idea that in any particular population the traits in it's gene pool allow for some members to survive change. SELECTION, the pressures (including limited resources) will "weed out" the less fit organisms only allowing the better fit to breed. And INHERITANCE, or the idea that offspring have traits like their successful parents. The bottom line is, since man has been able to manipulate most of these factors (for us and so many other organisms) it's really hard to say what's next. Please cut and paste these concepts into your notes before I see you next. Regardless, when you return next week I will have small tasks for you over the week, but you will have the vast majority of your time to work on your IA. Please come prepared to work on Tuesday. Some of those small tasks will include finally taking the chapter 5.1 and 5.2 quiz, DBQ's, and some small preparation for our next unit. Honors Biology - Did I slack?! Sure did! Thanks to those who had questions this weekend. So what we have so far is the first part of a Data and Analysis section for your lab report based off of the fact that we are measuring the amount of bacterial growth through a turbidity test. This means that we are making an indirect measurement of the bacterial growth based off of the assumption that bacteria will block some of the light that would come through. You also made sure to test each of your plates in five different locations to account for variations in growth. Now, what I need you to do with this data is to analyze it so you can draw some conclusions. So, you started with initial baseline data and then found the data on how much light passed through (and didn't pass through). You should have expressed this as percentage. Using a percentage of change allows us to compare data no matter what photometer we used, etc. You always get a percentage by dividing the part you want to know more about (how much light is blocked) and dividing it by the total (The amount of light that passed through a plate with no growth). On your spread sheet the formula looks something like this "=((C3-B2)/C3)". Obviously I don't know what your real cells are named, but C3 represents your total light in an unused plate and B2 represents the total light still coming through. So C3-B2 would represent the amount of light blocked in expressed in lux. When you divide that sum (as seen in the formula) what you now have is light blocked expressed as a percentage (a better tool for comparison). Once you have done this process for each of your samples, you are now set to make graphs/charts of the data and you have set yourself up for the next part of the lab report which will be the evaluation. Come to school on Tuesday with a complete spread sheet and at least one graph that compares the percentages of the 2 test plates and the unused plate percentage. I could see this as 3 bars on a graph, or maybe pie graphs? Come with something, but it can be in an electronic format. No need to print yet.
Monday IB Biology - Dearest Students, Your dancing was divine! Your moves were impeccable! Your shimmy went perfectly with your shake! But remember the concepts behind these moves. Even though we are moving on to the macro scale world of biology does not mean we can forget the microscopic world. In fact, it's the macro scale world that will show you the end products of all of the microscopic concepts. Tomorrow we will prepare for another day of review, but after tomorrow, we'll be off and running into new territory. In the meantime, there are a few things that I need you to do. 1) Make sure you walk through ALL of your review flashcards. Spend a little bit of time with those terms that are foggy. 2) Please come prepared with your IA. At this point you should have a research question, background information, a hypothesis, and possibly even a procedure. If you do not have any of these pieces, let's get them done tonight. And 4) Lastly, you then chose two "smaller pyramids" found within your big pyramid and described what the three blocks in each of these smaller pyramids have to do with each other. You should have a research question for your group and you should have a method of measuring growth.
