classwork/Homework
Monday IB Biology - HOLIDAY Honors Biology - HOLIDAY Tuesday IB Biology - SO today some of you got to hear from our Think First program about traumatic injury. For those of you who didn't you got an amazing powerpoint presentation on cellular respiration. Regardless, everyone at this point should be intimately familiar with cellular respiration and ready to present to me (or the freshman) on Friday. I've posted the powerpoint below for those who are not. Honors Biology - You guys were luck enough to hear from our guest speakers today Deshajon and Tim from the Think First program. As you reflect on today's speakers don't forget about the research you've been doing on genetic causes of disease, as well as farther back when you studied what keeps us healthy or makes us sick. The injuries these guys sustained don't really fall into these categories, so I'll ask you one question. Is there a way to help people with their type of injury. Please research one type of research going on that involves solving this type of problem. You can put this on a separate piece of paper. I'll pick up your one-pagers tomorrow. Also, bonus for Baymar! I hope he reads this. Baymar said that testosterone is not technically a protein and he is right. About 3/4 of all hormones are protein derived, but that leaves a 1/4 that are not! While testosterone is a chemical communicator like all hormones, this hormone is actually derived from lipids! I have learned something new myself. Baymar, come get your super awesome sticker!!! ...can any of you find other things I listed as a protein, but isn't? Wednesday IB Biology - Today we spent time going over the details of cellular respiration, the powerpoint is still posted below. You then had a little bit of time to work in your groups. PLease know that you will be presenting this information on Friday, and you will only have tomorrow to prepare. Please do NOT ask me for more time on Friday. Each person in your group should have a detailed knowledge of the process and how cyanide causes issues to the process. I will be asking questions of each participant and you don't want to be the weak link!!! Tonight you should be prepared with any last minute questions for your presentation, and I will be coming around to quiz you! FUN!!! Honors Biology - Today we spent our time doing some research on the answers to so many of our questions, but the main one being, "How did the boys with DMD end up with their disability?" The article was glued/taped to the right side of a new entry and the images were on the left. In the blank spot on the left I want you to make a response to two things. 1) Knowing what you know now, how would you respond to the essential question, and 2) pick one lingering question from the board (what does this have to do with babies? How do cells replace themselves? or another) that you can answer and respond to that one as well. Thursday IB Biology - Today we discussed some things that have been annoying me about learning and teaching. Thank you for helping find the best course for everyone to learn. I will take those of you who fail the exams into personal tutoring and then allow a redoing of work for a passing score of 3. The rest of today we had to put the final touches on your poisoning case! Thank you to those of you who are making the extra effort to do this for my freshman. PLease be ready tomorrow. Honors Biology - Today we didn't really get a chance to complete our debriefing of our readings from yesterday since it was a minimum day, but we'll finish this up tomorrow. There really isn't any homework for me, but I want you to do the following challenge instead... when we return from thanksgiving break we will be doing a food drive. Bring in a can or box of food tonight if you can and start the good vibes for those who are less capable. Friday IB Biology - Over this break I want you to know that I really want you to spend some time in nature. Take a hike, go hang out at the beach, go ride your bike around town, run, and maybe, just sit quietly and go inside your head for a while under a tree. Please decompress. Once you have regrouped I want you to respond to a very odd question, "If you were approached by an extra-terrestial who was going to devour you because he thought that you are biochemically the top organism to the planet, how could you convince them that plants actually are the top organism on the planet and that the plants should be devoured instead." You are smart and realize these aliens are too, so talk biochemistry from chapters 8.3 and 8.2 and convince them. Using that information, how would you convince them? Please come prepared with your detailed response when we return. READ ABOUT ADOPT A FAMILY BELOW. Honors Biology - Today we got around to summarizing the work that you did on the research article. In preparation for the project you will start when you return I need you to complete the create-a-kid self-assessment. The sheet I gave you in class (which you don't really need cause you can just write your alleles on a piece of paper), and the instructions on how to fill it out and found as a PDF below. You do need the directions below. Please place your sheet, or at least the information in your next entry in your notebooks. It will be fun! READ ABOUT ADOPT A FAMILY BELOW.
ADOPT A FAMILY!!!! This year we have the following family to adopt. This event is to make their lives a little bit brighter around the holiday season. During Thanksgiving I want you to consider participating. If you want to go out and buy things for these kids given their information below, go for it, but know that you can also just donate money and I can go shopping for those things they might like but haven't been purchased. If you can't donate, don't worry about it! But if you can donate, even the smallest amounts of change can add up to make a difference! ...last year we had people donate all of their change from lunch and raised about $80!!!
