classwork/Homework
Monday
IB Biology - Today was a weird day! Due to the assembly we ended up only discussing the ethical uses of CRISPR. Tonight what I will ask you to turn in is an ethical framework for the uses of CRISPR. The scoring for this will be as follows: No credit for a shallow discussion of the limitations we should impose, Full Credit for a discussion of all of the implications and limitations, and Full Credit and 3 extra credit points for a full and rounded guideline that is able to clearly define boundaries for the use of CRISPR. Good opportunity here! Oh, and tomorrow as we head back to a normal schedule please be SURE that you understand chapter 3.5 from last week. I will be asking some detailed questions that you will need to present. Honors Biology - Today we had a good discussion about a couple of things. 1) We discussed how you should be thankful for who you are. 2) Our new question is Do the principles of evolution apply to macroscale/eukaryotic organisms as well as prokaryotic organisms. 3) We set ourselves up for a "game" for tomorrow called Seed Hunters. Your should have three charts that are 4x9 (3x8 is usable) ready to go in your notebook. Tuesday IB Biology - Today we discussed the DBQ which illustrated that there may be unseen effects to our genetic modification. It was a good discussion and some of you even illustrated why these could have evolutionary consequences. Then we split up the concepts in the book on chapter 3.5 and divided the work up so that you could present your small section tomorrow. If you were absent, you should be ready to question presenters understandings for you to get your credit. On another note, I have been reviewing IAs with students every day. Your revised IA will be due on February 13th. Honors Biology - SO today we started a fun experiment that dealt with Seed Hunters! ...and their prey. We will continue to do this into tomorrow to collect more data, but for tonight I need you to set up a Google Sheets for the data you collected today. Just a spreadsheet and maybe make a graph to best show the data. Let's see this data shows change over time...hmmmm....line graph? Remember, have a data table and a line graph of the data. Wednesday IB Biology - Today we started by celebrating our GHD scholarship recipients. Good work! Then we started to digest chapter 3.5. Since we have a guest speaker tomorrow there really isn't anything I need from you other than being ready with your portion of the chapter. WHAT?! A day off? Yes, I am getting old. Honors Biology - Today we collected a more sophisticated set of data. You need to make this data into a graph which you will be sharing with a partner tomorrow. That's it! Thursday IB Biology - Well today we were suppose to have a guest speaker, but she forgot. It happens, no biggie. We'll get her back at a later date. In the meantime we just jumped back into our 3.5 information. We had some really good discussions on natural and man-made cloning! Tomorrow we will finish this up and start into our next topic. PLease be sure you understand as much as we have done so far as there may be a reading quiz to make sure you "get it." Honors Biology - Today we spent nearly all of our time digging around the graph that you created. You will need to print this out and attach it to the left side of this entry for homework. ...pretty easy. When we discussed this graph it was really interesting that you were able to describe population dynamics as well evolutionary ideas. Tomorrow we will continue to see some examples of how this might apply to our big question of, "Does evolution happen with macroorganisms?" Friday IB Biology - Today we spent a little bit of time discussing ASMR and Binaural sounds and the possible biological function of this response. Weird, huh?! Next we finished our presentations and moved on to make our transition next week to our next topic that deals with speciation and evolution. Next we watched this movie in order to see what we know about evolution: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=plVk4NVIUh8 . In the meantime there are three things I need from you on Tuesday: 1) Finish your revised IA this weekend, they are all due on midnight on the 13th. 2)Be sure you bring in materials for your plant growth project (a pot, soils, etc.), and 3) You will be building a mesocosm so bring in plants, animals, and materials that you think you might need. NOTE: I WAS JUST REMINDED THAT YOUR IA MUST BE SUBMITTED WITH NOT NAME OR ID ON THE PAPER! I NEED YOU TO SUBMIT THE FILE WITH YOUR NAME, BUT DON'T HAVE YOUR NAME ACTUALLY ON THE PAPER/FILE ITSELF. Honors Biology - Today we started by looking at some interesting phenomena about sound and relaxation to get you thinking about May when we have a community health fair and you'll be presenting a topic. Next we took inventory on what we know about evolution and what we still need to know about it. Your job this weekend is actually nothing. Just come back ready to work on Tuesday.
