classwork/Homework
Monday - Holiday! IB Biology - NA Honors Biology - NA Tuesday IB Biology - BASICS: Using the assignment your class designated for you, your work should: Should be in your own words Be colorful Have unique information that defines the period Describe the hydrosphere, atmosphere, geosphere and biosphere of the time. Include major transitions before and after the time. Higher score= 6 Speciation Consumer Producer Autotroph Heterotroph Detritivore Saprotrophs Community vs population Nutrient Cycling Higher Score = 7-8 Percentages of organisms Evolution during the period Details on transitions. Details on evidence Your job tonight is to create flashcards on the concepts from 4.1 (see the list above). Color and symbolic pictures on the front, definitions on the back. LASTLY, many people did not work very hard today on our poster. It must be complete by Thursday!!! If you are in PERIOD 2, here are your assignments: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1g5h2viD0ktrSSFi0HnHPA5fJ1XUhdjO5gyBZsEqnnC0/edit?usp=sharing If you have a few spare minutes, please complete the following surveys for your fellow IB students. https://forms.gle/dUaAfLkUiQ7CbPmc9 https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScT0GdF3D8Af3BH7_uXW6RcWcsCPLeucz6zAJjZX6MKObfeNw/viewform?vc=0&c=0&w=1 Honors Biology - Today we started our view of where we came from! We did this by watching a video on the Rise of Mammals to see our distant ancestors (https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/video/rise-of-the-mammals/) . Later this week we will look at humans specifically, but for now just focus on those pressures that caused the rise of mammals. This goes on the right side of the entry we started today. On the left side I want you to do two venn diagrams on some terms that we'll need for this week. Convergent vs Divergent Evolution, and Analogous vs Homologous structures on organisms. Oh, and the 1st progress report comes out on Friday. Please get Parent Input on your notebook work by tomorrow. If you have lost your sheets, please print another from the Online Resource page of this website. Wednesday IB Biology - Poster is done tomorrow at the end of class: All data, pictures, and transitions. Color code BLUE for qualities of a 5-6, and RED for qualities of a 7-8, (see Monday). Also be sure to read chapter 4.1 And if you haven't started to put it together you should be noticing that there is a connection between evolution and the environment. Look at the following climate data site and can we compare current climate change (the rate) with that of the past? https://climate.nasa.gov/evidence/ All students, please read the flyers attached below for an amazing opportunity! For one you must be fluent in another language, but the other is open to anyone! This is new and could be really exciting! Honors Biology - Two big ideas from yesterday: 1)Change starts at the base of the ecosystem (plants/autotrophs) 2) The evolution of any organism is not just about the organism, but the interactions of the whole ecosystem. Today we started by watching Dr. Rick Potts video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RQ7VUZHwbEk Evidence of Evolution. and added new information to entry 52. Then we started a NEW ENTRY: Climate Effects on Human Evolution: How did humans expand across the Earth? We then used the Human Odyssey Interactive Map: https://legacy.calacademy.org/human-odyssey/map/?mpweb=1018-10555-1617482 Creating a timeline of human habitation/movement and climate. Make this double column; Event/Climate HW: On the left side of your entry: Climate effects on human evolution. http://humanorigins.si.edu/research/climate-and-human-evolution/climate-effects-human-evolution Divide the work with your partners. This is due tomorrow. The Variability Selection Hypothesis 1) Tools 2) Migration 3) Encephalization adaptation 4) Communication 5) Social Networks Don't forget that Parent Input is due. All students, please read the flyers attached below for an amazing opportunity! For one you must be fluent in another language, but the other is open to anyone! This is new and could be really exciting! Thursday IB Biology - Today you went crazy finishing your posters. Tomorrow you will look at the other groups project. Last night I asked you to look at the climate data and to have read chapter 4.1. Tomorrow we will bring all of these ideas together along with information on chapter 4.2 Please preview the concepts in 4.2 and come with questions. Lastly, don't forget that we will also go over IA evaluations. Please have them ready. The Blood Bank is looking for donations. Please consider. If you are 18 (or over 16 with parent permission) and weigh 110 lbs or more, you can donate. EXTRA CREDIT IF YOU DO. Honors Biology - This week we have pieced together the rise of mammals, and then the rise of modern homo sapien, but what about the other hominids? What happened to them? You watched a small section of this movie (https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/video/great-human-odyssey/) starting at minute 50, and you probably got some ideas. On the left hand side of the entry we did today I want you to decide what caused the extinction of Neanderthal and Denisovan hominids. Use all of the things you learned about from yesterday and what you picked up today. Your explanation should include CLIMATE, as well as homo sapien traits as factors. Also, do not forget that grades get posted tomorrow and if you do not have your parent input you will receive a zero. Lastly, do not forget that there is a case study test on evolution tomorrow. You will be given a human population to work with this time. Please review the foundational ideas of evolution (variation, time, inheritance, selection, etc.) and speciation. OH, and you should remind yourself about Alleles and how those play out in genotypes. In other words, do you remember what Aa means, or if a trait is autosomal recessive. It's all review and look back at your case studies on Huntington's disease, or Cystic Fibrosis, etc. Friday IB Biology - turnitin.com Use Enroll Key: IBIA and Class ID: 23862995 There is a hard deadline. I will need an electronic copy send to [email protected]. Today we looked at the evaluation that you've made on your IA. We then took a look at the timeline from the other class and looked at trends. What has happened on Earth in the past? Can we see how punctuated equilibrium might happen? What role does the climate play? We then looked at this to see what how the world shifted over time: https://www.biointeractive.org/classroom-resources/earthviewer But he big question we tackled is what do these have to do with our current ecosystems. Part of the answer can be found with this lecture on 4.2: https://www.bioknowledgy.info/42-energy-flow.html Honors Biology - Today you worked on the evolutionary case study based on the people of Tibet. We'll be picking up the last bits of Addie's case on Monday when we talk about immune response. This weekend I would like you to go to your notebooks and start a new entry called, "How do we get sick and get better?" Underneath the right hand page, please find out the symptoms of: Influenza (The Flu), COVID-19 (coronavirus in the news), Ebola, and bacterial infections. This all goes on the upper right.
