classwork/Homework
Monday - HOLIDAY Tuesday IB Biology - Today we spent a ton of time with preparing for the next month or so. We started by reviewing the video from Friday and listing what we know about evolution tro get us going. We then looked at Mexican Sage (Salvia Leucantha) and Jade plant (Crassula ovata) and looked at the unique adaptations that they have. After that we started our grow contest using the Jade so remember you can water them at any time, and add nutrients etc. The goal is to increase the mass as much as possible in the time given (approx. a month). Lastly, you picked a partner for the mesocosm, please be sure that you have the materials. It's also important that you and your partner decided on what you plant/raise (plants, bugs, etc.) in your mesocosm, your variable that you will test, and how you will measure that change without opening the mesocosm. ALSO, revised IA Labs are due tomorrow night before midnight! Honors Biology - Today we recapped what we know and what we would like to know to answer the questions about whether evolution occurs in macroorganism (eukaryotes) as it does in microorganisms (prokaryotes). After watching the movie on the UCSD Juncos (https://vimeo.com/59871689) we then developed a theory of how the Juncos ended up the way they did in our notebook. The last thing we did in class was to write a lingering question that would help us understand the Junco situation. Tonight, if your LAST name begins with A-H I want you to complete Homework A, and if your last name was I-Z you will complete Homework B. Both of these are posted below. You do not need to print the sheets, just answer them on the right side of a new entry. OH, I ALMOST FORGOT! ...You need parent signature in your notebook. IT's worth a TEST GRADE! Wednesday IB Biology - Today we did three things: 1) you took care of your jade plant, 2) you created your mesocosm along with your research question and how you would measure this, and 3) you and your partner started on the DBQs for chapter 10.3. These DBQs are found on 456, 457.458. 459, and 459-460. You and your partner must complete these by Tuesday of next week and should show the work behind you answers. Honors Biology - Today we started with a review of the homework. Next we checked to see which questions we have answered. I then posed the question of how would you collect information on the junco and that led us to the idea of how would you measure wingspan on you! Your homework tonight, other than parent input, is to develop a detailed method of measuring human wingspan. This should include pictures and writing and should be very specific. This will go on the right side of your next entry. Thursday IB Biology - Today you finished creating your mesocosm (of love). Next you began work on the DBQs that are listed yesterday. Come prepared tomorrow with questions you may have. Many of you have already come to me about the last one so I will start with that one. Yes, you will be getting a score on this so please complete them showing ALL of your work. Also, you have a reading quiz coming! Honors Biology - Today we collected some data on our "wingspan" to create histograms. We used those histograms to see the patterns that data follows, to understand what mean median and mode mean, and how standard deviations can help us interpret data ranges and weather or not a number is an outlier to be included (or not). Tomorrow you will have a simple quiz on what we have been studying so far. The questions will be on: What qualities were examined on the junco? What factors may have selected for the UCSD juncos? If a trait persists in a "common garden" experiment, what does it mean? So you understand nature vs nurture, and can give an example? What is environment influenced selection? But other than preparing for this, I want you to remember that I left you with a question, which was, "Are these two sets of juncos truly different species?" This means you will need to look up the definition of speciation and then give me your analysis. Oh! I almost forgot about offering you extra credit! IN science there is a statistical test called a T-Test which is used to determine the significance of two sets of data being different (or the same). Using this fictional set of data, tell me if the bird wing lengths of junkos and bunkos (both fictional) are significantly different (or the same), and to what degree (p value)? Junko 13, 15, 17, 12, 14, 17, 22, 15cm And Bunko 23, 17, 14, 17, 15, 11, 14, 13cm This is extra credit and you typically start seeing this in your junior or senior year so don't feel bad if you can't do it, but if you can, awesome. Hint: use a spreadsheet to do your work. This is due by Tuesday at the latest. Friday IB Biology - Today we took some time to wrap up the ideas of chapter 10.3, and is the last stop before we dive into the chapter on evolution. On Tuesday when we return please have your DBQ work ready to be turned in first thing with all work/explanation listed. Single response answers will be marked as incorrect with our work/explanation. In addition, There will be a quiz on the material from chapter 10 on Tuesday. The subunits of chapter 10 were on Meiosis, inheritance, and genetics and speciation. Know the information. The questions at the end of the chapter would REALLY help. Lastly, you should have the stats on your favorite organism, including the biomes it lives in, the food webs it belongs to, taxonomy, behaviors, and ancestor species. Honors Biology - Today we started by talking about the quiz questions to make sure you understood the content . Then we took the quiz. I know that everyone really struggled with a certain question, that was because I marked the quiz improperly! You all got credit for it! Next we discussed our question of what does it mean to be a new species and really struggled with that, but that's because there isn't really a good answer. So deeper we went into how these traits are transferred, which you already know some about., and started the process of looking at Pigeons at this website. https://learn.genetics.utah.edu/content/pigeons/ The worksheet you were suppose to complete is due when I see you on Tuesday.
