classwork/Homework
Monday
IB Biology - So today we sort of took inventory of where we have been. We looked at the major idea of classification, looked at how that applies to your animal projects, and they recapped it by doing your follow up poster. I'll get those graded as soon as possible. Your task tonight, since we have a test coming up on Wednesday is to analyze your understanding of chapter 5. I would suggest going through BioNinja and seeing where your weaknesses lie. Come prepared with questions for tomorrow and I'll come prepared to share the content of the test. Honors Biology - Today we made a sweeping review of the material so far. We went from Addie's dilemma to the juncos of UCSD, to the lab work from last week, and to the article. You then took a quiz on the work you did last week. We didn't quite get to the POGIL work you did on Friday so we'll pick that up tomorrow. So, what you need to do is come prepared with any questions you have at this point. So, look at each entry and write your question about that topic in the "crack" of the entry. Tuesday IB Biology - SO today was really focused around the ideas of evolution in preparation for the test tomorrow. This test will be relatively short, but will test you on all of the content from the chapter. Like yesterday I would suggest you go to BioNinja and review. Honors Biology - Today we did a sample practice test in preparation for tomorrow. Use that practice test to review for tomorrow, but remember that it's going to be a different subject and different graphs...and twice as long. You need to know the big content of evolution so review your notebook for more information. Wednesday IB Biology - Today was a super exciting day of testing!!! Tomorrow we start the final two topics for the year before we prep for the big exam in May. Even if you don't take the real thing, you will be taking a version of it. Anyway, to prepare for our last unit that will span two topics we will continue to do this from the standpoint of an overriding project, but his one will be different in that you will now be taking the reigns as researcher. The fundamental question you will be trying to answer is how could climate change affect plants. I'm talking about a very detailed picture of answering this question. So please just come prepared with what you think you would need to know to answer this question. I'll have more details about the project itself tomorrow. Honors Biology - Today was such a fun day!!! ...fun for me, but not really for you. Tomorrow we start out on a new idea, but I want you to be totally ready. To be ready I want you to update your Table of Contents in your notebook. I'm working on mine! Oh, also, tomorrow we will be working on finishing and submitting your POGILS, so please come with those. You will work on them first and then turn them in. It's a short day. COOL Opportunity: Career Education: San Diego & Imperial Counties Community Colleges is partnering with the City of San Diego Fire-Rescue Department to support the Girls Empowerment Camp on April 6 & 7, 2019. This is a 2-day camp for teens ages 14-18 and includes: • Hands-on training with firefighting tools and equipment • 360-degree exposure to public safety career options • CPR/AED training GEC Flyer – also attached Website: http://sdfirerescue.org/gec/ Registration form: https://sandiego.seamlessdocs.com/f/empowermentcamp Thursday IB Biology - Today you started your final project. You and your team have been hired to evaluate the effects of climate change on plants. To complete this task you need to work together to: 1) Produce a portfolio which will have the following components and be based in EVIDENCE (your data or others) An introduction that describes your plants structure is detail to the cellular level, The physiology of the plant including the role of xylem and phloem. The biome that the plant is from Climate change projections for the region Include as many visuals as are appropriate, Be sure all visuals are tightly "fit" to the subject An analysis of the cumulative data An assessment of the validity of the data And a Projection and Recommendation for the future of the plant. 2) Some subjects that should be considered for the plant should include: Physiology, metabolism, growth, structure (roots, stems, and leaves), tolerances (pH, sublight, water, temperature, etc.), sensitivity, adaptations (cellular and macroscale), vulnerabilities (disease, etc.), soil preference, food web position and importance, and many others. 3) Some subjects that should be considered for the climate/ecology should include: How climate change occurs naturally and non-naturally, carbon cycling, energy flow, effects to the region, change over time, effects (rainfall, humidity, soil run off, weather frequency), soils and geology (Altitude, aspect, etc.) Tonight I want you to start thinking of which plant you would like to use as your example. This plant should be readily available here in San Diego as you will need to dissect a number of them for your study. Cell size and type of plant can make a big difference so do a little research. Honors Biology - While today we worked in class to complete and submit the POGIL, you then learned about citizen science. Tonight I want you to prepare for tomorrow, by looking at this link and figuring out how to use Snapshot Serengeti. That's it! Tomorrow we'll use it more and start to look at a big picture of why this might be important. https://www.zooniverse.org/projects/zooniverse/snapshot-serengeti Friday IB Biology - So today we got organized! You found people who will be your project manager and who was your technician. You divided up your work and started the process, but I noticed that we have some deficits in answering this question (which I anticipated). On Monday I will start discussing plant anatomy to help with. We'll also establish the rubric from which you can work. All you really need to do this weekend is to gather sources (with citations) and bring some plant specimens to work with. On another important point, I now know that the last of IB testing will be on the 24th of May. I am looking for seniors to send me dates after the 24th that you think would be a great day to take our field trip. You must email me your preference to have it considered! Honors Biology - Well, today got changed pretty quickly once I saw how many people were out due to the field trip. SO this is what I need you to do...it's kind of a choose your own adventure ...without the choice part. IF YOU WERE HERE, watch and take notes on: The Thin Green Line: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z6ANVQoe4oU Notes go on the right of a new entry. On the left side of the entry we will summarize with these questions: How are the organisms affected? How are the Humans affected? Are there decisions that humans are making that are harming or helping? IF YOU WERE NOT HERE, I want you to NOT watch the movie and to just prepare your notebook entry as above. Everyone's reflections will be due on Tuesday!
