IB Biology - Today you received back your lab reports and we looked at the data set you produced. A big of you have minor issue that need to be resolved. Fix those and resubmit tomorrow. Next we learned about the content from our peers about 2.3.3 through 2.3.5. Tonight I need you to thoroughly review the health evaluation process of health risks from foods and supplements. This information can be found on page 84 and 85. Tomorrow I will introduce the research project to you so be very familiar with the information.
Biology -Today we looked at the lab work you did last week and then combined our results as a class. Then we used this data to create a data set that we could graph. Make sure that your graphs are complete for tomorrow since we will be digesting this information tomorrow in the form of a conclusion.
Honors Biology - Today we looked at the various experiments that you all ran last week. Today we collaborated to put all of the info together and then to create graphs that were accurate to the data represented and included averages of the data. Today and tonight it will be important that you put this data into a electronic format that is precise so that we can continue developing ideas from this data. Remember, a printed lab report is due by Thursday, don't get behind!
IB Biology - Today we continued our learning by hearing what our peers have found out about carbohydrates, lipids, and now, proteins! We should finish this process this tomorrow. In the meantime I want you look at these supplements that people use to improve their lives. We'll be looking at the EVIDENCE of their efficacy. The following list is only a start, feel free to pursue your own product if you like.
Glucosamine and chondroitin,
Alpha Lipoic acid,
...and MANY more.
You pick. Once you pick one I want you to see if you can find actual research based on this product. Find the evidence.
Biology - Today we finished our graphs and then ultimately finished the packet, or at least that was the plan! What you didn't complete in class, you will complete tonight. The packet should be finished and neat. If you want a 5 you need to neatly complete this work and must make deep responses to the conclusion questions.
Honors Biology - Today we started with our analysis and conclusion. Tonight you will need to complete this analysis although your lab report will not be turned in until Thursday. Tomorrow will be your last chance to ask questions. Everything should be complete by Thursday.
IB Biology - Today we started with a discussion of the current health crisis in San Diego of Hepatitis A. We also discussed the financial ramifications of these outbreaks, as well as jobs in the sector of public health. Connect with our researchPlacebo And Mind with body or body with a mind? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ILDy6kYU-xQ How does this connect with what we are researching? Oh! And don't forget that I would love to have your parents come in if they work in health care.
Biology -First we discussed the Hepatitis A outbreak since it is a current event about biology. Then we turned in our packets, then we looked at what we have learned this year, Where the materials for life come from, how they got to Earth, how the cycle through Earth, how they get in us, how they get digested, but not how they get to our cells! To answer this question I did a demo in the room showing diffusion and you attempted to explain it. Here's the interactive we watched afterwards: http://highered.mheducation.com/sites/0072495855/student_view0/chapter2/animation__how_diffusion_works.html Tonight, if you didn't do it in class, I want you to go on the left side of the entry and to write 5 "rules" that explain how molecules diffuse.
Honors Biology - Lab write-ups are due tomorrow so be sure that you use the lab write-up guidelines in your science notebook to make sure you have the order of the write-up, and then use the powerpoint I posted in last weeks blog to make sure your specific requirements have been met. I failed to mention that today we discussed the current Hepatitis A outbreak and the related topics of health care and public health in general. After we were done with that we then started the conversation on the process of diffusion using a demo and this website: http://highered.mheducation.com/sites/0072495855/student_view0/chapter2/animation__how_diffusion_works.html
Oh! And don't forget that I would love to have your parents come in as a guest speaker on certain days if they work in health care.
IB Biology - using page 85 and the research you have done on your health supplement report to use by creating a One Pager. There are instructions in your reference pages, but you don't need to stick to them too tightly. On one page I want you to tell me about the implication and limitations of the evidence for the product. I want you to also include an illustration, and report the data. Make a nice border, and then include something about placebo effect and the mind/body connection that might play a role. Lastly, don't forget we have a quiz first thing tomorrow.
Biology - Today you had a guest speaker on immunization, Dr. Kurth, if you were in 4th period. If you were in 5th period we went over the 5 rules for diffusion. Regardless of your class, your only homework is to read this article https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2010/08/100826122624.htm and take notes on the right. These notes should be a one sentence summary of each paragraph. Then you will create an ad for a fictional "chemzyme" on the left hand side. Do it just like the movie poster processing task in your notebook. Right side notes, left side advertisement.
Honors Biology - Today we reviewed the rules of diffusion that we started yesterday. Then I want you to read the following and complete a movie poster/advertisement http://health.usnews.com/health-news/blogs/eat-run/2013/04/23/digestive-enzymes-help-or-hype
On the right side of a new entry you will write a note for each paragraph. A paragraph is a complete idea so you should sum it up with a quick sentence.
At the bottom make a decision of whether it is help or hype.
and then on the left side of this entry I want you to use the processing strategy , "Make a movie Poster" found in your reference sheet titled "Process, Process, Process...." or maybe do it as an ad for enzymes.
IB Biology - Today we were somewhat limited on time so we only got a chance to take the quiz and to discuss some of the health supplement research that you had collected. The health research will be coming back to you for a clean up as many people didn't follow the instructions. On Monday we'll be learning about Enzymes and in preparation for that I want you to complete the data based question found on pages 100-101.
Biology - Today we started with looking at your articles on chemzymes. Then we began a new entry to build on our idea of diffusion. "Lost at Sea" is what we called the new entry and the idea is that two people were lost today. One is lost out at sea and the other in a lake. We only have one helicopter to rescue these people, who do we rescue first? We reviewed the properties of water, and then created hypotheses. Finally we didn't actually have enough time to set up our experiment, but we can do that on Monday. So, no homework. Lucky you!
