IB Biology - Today we started by turning in our homework and finishing our protein introduction. I then touched a little bit on enzymes and how we would be designing some research on enzymes that focus on Lipases, proteases, and amylases. You selected your groups and tonight I need you to prepare for this by being familiar (i.e. know them well) with the following concepts found in chapter 2.5 and 8.1. Be sure you know about the many examples (DBQ 100) that might inspire your enzyme research. AND BE SURE to know about the lactose free milk on page 105.
Honors Biology - Today we put some pieces together for the next question we had which was where does the glucose come from and how does it store energy? You turned in your POGIL from Friday, we then discussed the results, and finally made drawings of chloroplasts and the photosynthetic process. Tomorrow we'll start getting back into the athletic process and so I need you to think about cellular respiration, photosynthesis, heart rate, and respiration rate, etc. and how that would look if you were going to manipulate one of these factors. In other words, much more simply put, what could you do, knowing what you know, to an athlete that would improve their performance? If you could only change one thing to prepare them for an athletic event, what would you change and why? Write this on a piece of paper to be turned in tomorrow.
IB Biology - Today we made sure to address your questions about enzymes. You asked some fabulous questions and I think you're ready for the quiz tomorrow. While we will take the quiz on 2.5 tomorrow, we will also go into the design of your lab. Tonight you and your partners should have isolated your fundamental question you will investigate. This along with purpose, a title, and a hypothesis. This should be on a shared document that you can all contribute to! As you design this lab, be sure you really understand what is found on pages 100-104. It's all about labs!
Honors Biology - Today we started our day with a recap of what we know and how our latest process of photosynthesis relates to cell respiration. We then discussed our lab where we'll attempt to improve our athlete's performance.
BUT, of course, we first needed to tackle the ethics of experimentation. We'll be working on athletes, but I asked you about your opinion on using animals, and primates, and humans. On the left side of our entry, on the top half, I asked you about experimenting with cells. Kind of an odd question, but tell me what you think. Directly below this, on the bottom half, I want you to give me a general guideline for YOU. What is and isn't acceptable in experimentation for you. Please note that our stance at high school is one where we never put animals in any situation that could cause them harm.
Lastly, we will start taking baseline data on your athlete tomorrow. To prepare for this I want you to go through the list of factors we could change and to decide on the top two factors you want to experiment with. Remember that you want to affect your athlete as much as possible, so pick well. To do this I want you to highlight your top two choice from the list we made today.
IB Biology - Today, after taking our quiz on enzymes, we spent our time developing our enzymatic reaction lab. At this point you should have sent me a materials list for the kinds of lab ware that I can provide. You should also have all of your initial work (title, hypothesis, purpose, etc.) completed and ready to be utilized/tested. Please understand that you will be turning in a group report. Oh, also understand that we will continue to learn new metabolic processes as we do this lab. Be ready to go tomorrow.
Honors Biology - Today our whole purpose was to write up our shared lab report on increase the performance of an athlete (How to create an overnight superstar). If you follow the lab report guidelines below, you cannot go wrong, USE THEM! If you want to see a really nice example of a lab, you also have a sample on the "Online Resources" you can look at one. It's not on this topic, but it should give you a good idea of the proper format!
IMPORTANT! I noticed that many of you did not collect baseline data on your test subject. DON'T WORRY. You can collect this data tonight once you have established your procedures. You only need to have your lab report up to part 5, this baseline data collected for tomorrow, AND whatever treatment you will do to your athlete.
IB Biology - SO the finalizing of your lab write up should have happened today. You made sure you used metric measurements, the procedures were easy and clear to follow, and you have your materials. In the meantime, while we experiment, we need to continue to learn new content. For this week I want you to do the following: Choose one of these these supplements that people use to improve their lives. Next, I want you to look at the EVIDENCE of their efficacy. EVIDENCE.... you may find that here is little, or that it is incomplete in what they report! Be a good skeptic. Please look at three sources that are not the manufacturer. Here's your list to choose from, but you can also do any other product that is not on there.

Once you have the research, tomorrow we will put it into a format, so just worry about collecting data.
Honors Biology - Today was a big lab day! You collected data on your treated athlete. Do NOT be concerned if your data does not come out as expected, this is good data too. Your only task tonight is to create a data chart using the shared document you created in class. Now take the data table and the bar graph and paste it into your document. If it isn't perfect, don't worry. We can clean it up later.
IB Biology - Today was day 2 of your experimentation. This entire lab will be due on Thursday of next week, please make sure you are doing what needs to get done. For now, I need you to finish the assignment you started last night. Using page 84 and the research you have done on your health supplement report to use by creating a One Pager. This is one piece of paper that has the name of the product, pictures related to it's supposed cures. I want you to tell me about the implication and limitations of the evidence for the product. I want you to also include an illustration, and report the data. Make a nice border, and then include something about placebo effect and the mind/body connection that might play a role. As long as you have these components, you are great. One page, that's it! Oh, one side of one page. Make it beautiful.
Honors Biology - Today we started our day discussing the Nobel prize in biology. We then discussed our homework from two days ago about how we feel about experimentation on cells. The reviews from you were mixed, but then we watched the short video on Henrietta Lacks (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eW_0ZMEYAQI) and your responses changed a little bit. Remember, your opinion is your opinion, but I hope you have solid reasons for what you believe. Well, anyway, the last thing we did was t review your data and the graph you created. And lastly, you created a conclusion. Your lab is due on Monday. ONE HARD COPY from your group. Please make sure that you and your partners carefully use the lab write up guidelines found below.
