Week one ...Let it begin!

TUESDAY
Today you all had an opportunity to learn a little bit about how your class operates.  You also had a chance to meet each other.  Each day I'll post what happened in class as well the homework that is due.  Sometimes I'll post extra credit opportunities as well.  So, if you are ever absent, always check this spot so you kind kind of get an idea of what you missed.

IB Biology - In addition to what every class must complete by Monday (below), on a separate sheet, please identify and explain where the independent variable, dependent variable, constants, and controls were in the experiment we did today.  If you believe some of these were missing, say so and then explain why you think that.

Tonight I need you to go to the website (scisavvy.weebly.com) make sure you understand everything found there.  Once you've done this I want you to create a cover sheet should have:
1) Which "Biology" course you take on it,
2) Your full name,
3) Using four colors create
at least four different images related to four different sections of our syllabus.
NOTE: The whole page should be full and should only have pictures related to the subjects we'll study this year so you must look at that syllabus on the website.

Next I need you to make a plan to get a durable 200 page (5 section) notebook like the example I showed in class.  You'll need it by Monday.

Lastly, complete the safety contract/survey at the bottom of the Laboratory Safety page.     1) Look over the site, 2) Plan to get a notebook, 3) Create a cover page for your notebook, 4) Sign the online survey/safety contract .

WEDNESDAY

IB Biology - Today you had a chance to collect information on how far we could jump. Tonight what I want you to do is to take the data and to make a graph that would best display the information and answer the question we started with, how far can a senior jump?  How you do this is up to you and I will post all of you class data in a spread sheet at the end of the day.  It will be found below.  Yes, the data from both classes should be used.   Oh, and don't forget that we need you to complete the work from Monday.

Biology - So today we did a project where you looked at a bunch of molecules and you needed to sort.  You then asked some questions about what you want to know to answer this question better.  Tonight you need to research the question you were assigned and come back with some answers.  These answers should be on a new sheet, not the one you made in class.  ALSO, be sure to describe if what we did today was "good science" or not?  This goes on the bottom of today's notes. We set it up for you.  Lastly, don't forget about all of the things listed under Monday.  It's all due on Monday.

Honors Biology - Same as regular bio above

THURSDAY

IB Biology - Today we took a look at the various graphs you came up with for the data you collected (as well as the other class).  We then discussed issues with the graphs and how our experimental design affected the data.  lastly we looked at a power point called "Ugly Graph"  posted below and analyzed the graphs.  Tonight I want you to go home and create a box and whisker plot of the two classes data.  This site will help with the box and whisker plot: https://www.varsitytutors.com/hotmath/hotmath_help/topics/box-and-whisker-plots

Biology -  Today we looked at the work you completed last night and then added corrections and then reflected in small groups.  Next we looked at the nature of science using a handout (posted below), and then lastly we answered those lingering questions that you didn't have answers to.  Tonight, based off of what we discussed in class using the handout, you should create a "Tweet" (Using 140 characters or less) on what good science is.  This will be on the bottom of the 4 person reflection you completed today.

Honors Biology - See above in biology

FRIDAY

IB Biology - Now that we have our books we need to start covering some content, but not until we finish this statistical analysis starter.  Today we learned how to construct a simple box and whisker plot.  Tonight I would like you to create a box and whisker plot using a hand drawn method.  Sort the numbers using the spread sheet I provided, but create the box and whisker by hand.   This site will help with the box and whisker plot if your notes aren't helping: https://www.varsitytutors.com/hotmath/hotmath_help/topics/box-and-whisker-plots

Biology -  Today we looked at some chemical reactions and listed all sorts of chemical information to learn more about those macromolecules we have been looking at.  Tonight, on a separate piece of paper, I would like you to create a statement that describes the relationship between the terms: Organic, Atom, Bond, and Molecule.  This statement is probably only about 2+ sentences long.

Honors Biology - See above in biology, but instead of writing a statement about the terms; Organic, atom, bond, and molecule, I want your writing to include the connection with exothermic and endothermic reactions.

Please also don't forget to complete the class safety contract, and get a notebook and make a cover by Monday!!!  The safety contract is now working. :)
