classwork/Homework
Monday IB Biology - So today we went over basic chemistry and walked that right into the cycling of carbon within a system. You then applied that to your ecosystem that you are creating a VR tour for. Your job is to not only complete this drawing for tomorrow, but to then apply what you drew to your VR tour which we will check tomorrow. When you are ready for tomorrow you should have 8 stops in your VR tour: 1 an introduction, at least 1 which shows us your "players", 3 trophic levels represented (must include producers), and at least 3 energy transfers (fluxes). Honors Biology - Here is the very violent video on acquired (adaptive) Immunity Watch this if you want to review, but don't forget we have last weeks videos as well. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PzunOgYHeyg Then you have to do a comic strip project. Get a four by completing specific (adaptive) immunity. Color, dialogue, etc. The players that should be include are: Macrophage, Helper T, Killer T, B cells, Memory cells (B and T), Antigen, Antibody, and of course a Pathogen. How to get a 5-6: Include the innate immune system (min. 2 components) How to get a 7-8: Cell mediation or/and Humoral response. Secondary infection. OR Vaccine use Tuesday IB Biology - First we discussed what we could do with the elementary kids. Next, you watched this video to point out the importance of the unsung heroes of ecosystems. Vultures, Heroes of the Ecosystem: https://mail.google.com/mail/u/0/#inbox/FMfcgxwGDWrhVPDjZmmBCxfmTLqtSRpn Figure out who the unsung hero of your ecosystem is and add them to your VR Tour. Do you also have an indicator species in your environment? Add them! ...That's two more stops or 2 more points of interest. Remember the scoring for this project, it is due on Friday. Earn a 3-4 if you have the basics (Look back at what I have asked) Earn a 5-6 by making it a 3-4 first but also including: abiotic/temp/water/shelter for animals/elevation data OR a minimum of 2 HNOPS cycles. Earn a 7-8 by making it like a 5-6 but also adding at least 3 negative human affects, and any positives. Last we watched the video on: “What ocean microbes reveal about the changing climate | Angelicque White” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z7NUaAGmg44&feature=em-uploademail There is a quiz tomorrow on the readings from chapter 4.1-4.3 so please refresh your memory. Honors Biology - Today we reviewed our initial questions from this immune system mini-unit. This led us to a new entry, "How Does the Immune System Work With Medications?" We know the answer of how antibiotics work, but this question lead us to the question of the use of vaccines and how they work. Here's the visual I had https://www.howitworksdaily.com/the-human-body-how-vaccines-work/ , but there are certainly plenty of videos you can find on youtube.com as well. I then did a review of the immune response for those still struggling, and the rest of you started working on your comics. Tonight I need you to continue working on those comics. They are due on Thursday, but be aware that this is your last night where this is all you have to complete. The next couple of nights will have other assignments. Wednesday IB Biology - You started today with a quiz. Then you worked with a partner on completing the DBQ on page 227, CO2 concentrations in oak woodlands Tonight I need you to ... look at long term data on CO2: https://www.climate.gov/news-features/understanding-climate/climate-change-atmospheric-carbon-dioxide And come in prepared to discuss your findings as well as be familiar with hydrosphere (ocean) acidification, albedo, and global heat retention. Here's an interesting article on a 46,000 year old bird: https://www.washingtonpost.com/science/2020/02/22/46000-year-old-bird-found-frozen-siberia-sheds-light-end-ice-age/ Honors Biology - On the left side of the entry from yesterday you took notes on the movie about one of the most famous stories on vaccinations. Jonas Salk and "A Shot to Save the World": https://ihavenotv.com/a-shot-to-save-the-world The notes you took on the left were about all of the personal, social, and economic factors that played a role in Polio vaccination development. If you did not finish this in class, please finish it at home. These factors we'll discuss tomorrow, but they play an important role in how society accepts what scientists do. As you know, many discoveries in science are ignored or feared even though they could help. With regards to this idea, on Friday you will be working to stop an outbreak using the following video game. Your role is to play this game tonight. You must be able to stop the "Great Flu" using many scientific as well as social "tools". So, you really need to practice the http://thegreatflu.com/ You could play it tomorrow, and not tonight, but It will be your assignment tomorrow as well, but it will be played in class on Friday for a grade! Oh, don't forget that the comic strip is due tomorrow! Hey, check out the flyer at the bottom of this week. Cool opportunity for some extra credit. Go with some friends and take selfies at the various locations of the event. Be sure to RSVP and get lunch! Thursday IB Biology - We started by looking at DBQ227 from yesterday Next we looked at: long term data on CO2: https://www.climate.gov/news-features/understanding-climate/climate-change-atmospheric-carbon-dioxide Evaluating claims about Carbon Dioxide. Then we played with spectroscopes to understand more about energy. Look at the full E-M spectrum: https://www.miniphysics.com/electromagnetic-spectrum_25.html We then review qualities of greenhouse gasses using the Figure on page 232 Tonight for homework, On a separate piece of paper. I want you to respond with the following: How do we solve this issue? How do you know there really is an issue? Go find sources that say global climate change isn’t an issue, cite this. What do you think? Lastly, I want you to find climate change projections for YOUR ecosystem in 2050 and Add what might happen to your VR Tour. This is due tomorrow so do a nice job using the rubric from Tuesday. Check out this amazing biological discovery: https://www.sciencealert.com/this-is-the-first-known-animal-that-doesn-t-need-oxygen-to-survive Hey, and don't forget that the Special Olympic Basketball game is tomorrow night! 7pm in the gym Honors Biology - Today we started by reviewing the comic strips and turning those in. Next, we returned to our latest entry on how the immune system works with meds and added herd immunity. You then watch the simulations to simply illustrate the point of how it works. https://imgur.com/gallery/8M7q8#J7LANQ4 For Homework I need you to first work on a separate piece of paper on a criterion B score which should be titled "What data/test would you need to know if any vaccination was effective?" 1) Write a step by step method for a basic score. If you are looking for a 5-6, it should be like a 3-4, but then include an accounting of social and economic factors. If you are looking for a 7-8, it should first be like a 5-6 and then discuss sources of error in your method. Tomorrow you will score big points (for Criterion D) so practice The Great Flu: http://thegreatflu.com/ Check out this amazing biological discovery: https://www.sciencealert.com/this-is-the-first-known-animal-that-doesn-t-need-oxygen-to-survive Hey, and don't forget that the Special Olympic Basketball game is tomorrow night! 7pm in the gym Friday IB Biology - TAKING PET PICTURES and MEASUREMENTS??? At the end you will need to tell your story of the year. Today we did a peer review on your VR Tours using the rubric from Tuesday. And placed your information into this Google form: forms.gle/pXcJmZADqNcfBYZx7 So yesterday we established that matter and energy interact. This interaction can result in environmental change. We then discussed how to evaluate information that we read. We then looked at this site and evaluated it: https://skepticalscience.com/argument.php This weekend read this author. Please reflect on what is written. https://www.forbes.com/sites/michaelshellenberger/2019/11/25/why-everything-they-say-about-climate-change-is-wrong/#11c28e7312d6 Here's something to read and share with your parents. https://scitechdaily.com/simple-free-scientists-find-what-enhances-your-immune-system-helps-you-live-longer/ Honors Biology - This weeknd I want you to relax. Just relax. ...maybe share the article below with your parents.
