classwork/Homework
Monday
IB Biology - This week you are responsible for the content on 8.3. I don't expect you to have all of these to be completed by tomorrow, but should be composed into a diagram due on Thursday. I repeat, this should be a DIAGRAM just like the cellular respiration diagram you made before break. BOTH are due on Thursday. Cell structure in plants (draw and annotate) Cholorplast structure, pg 398 Location of light dependant reactions Products of light dependant reactions. Location of light-independent reactions Photoactivation Photolysis Electron transport chain Proton gradient Chemiosmosis Reduction of NADP Carbon Fixation Role of reduced NADP and ATP in the Calvin Cycle Triose Phosphate RuBP regeneration Next, on Wednesday you will be creating a Mesocosm ( Bottle Garden) You (and A partner) will have 2 bottles to work with. You can cut them open to build your garden, but must be sealed airtight once all construction is done. With each bottle you need to describe all contents and reasons using your knowledge of biochemistry. The goal is for at least one of the mesocosms must survive. During finals you will do a write up. Explaining your successes and failures. IF the mesocosm continues to live, you will receive bonus point to next semester's grade. EXTRA CREDIT: Watch the HBO movie: The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks 1) Summarize the movie as a timeline. 2) Discuss patients rights, family rights, and tissue rights? Doing some research, support your feelings on these topics with legal decisions that support your belief. 3) What is the difference between ethics and morals? 4)Emotions, religion, ethics play a role? Use specific examples from the movie and then share your ideas as to what the role of each of these should play in science. Biology - Today you got a chance to view a weird experiment using spinach leaves. Tonight, I want you to use what you know about cellular respiration and photosynthesis to describe what you saw. You probably want to make illustrations too. yes, use color to help describe. Your description goes on the left side of your entry today. Many of you didn't really follow the guidelines that were provided to you. But keep this lab as a model for next time about what to do, or not do. Today though we started to build on what we know about plants. You watched spinach plant parts sinking and rising. Your only job tonight is to try and explain why what you saw occurred. This goes on the left side of your entry and probably should have illustrations, and yes, color as well to help explain. Tuesday IB Biology - Today we went over the criteria once again for the mesocosm project. You should have finalized this project as well as started your photosynthesis diagram. The only homework you have is to gather your materials to start the assembly tomorrow. Biology - Today we played the 20 question game that revealed what happened in our demo from yesterday. Tonight I want you to gather the materials you need to create the best growing environment for your plant that you will be starting tomorrow. Honors Biology - You guys are just like regular bio in that you need to gather the materials necessary for the planting of your research bean stalk! Make sure you can describe exactly what you are doing and why this will maximize the growth of your plant. Wednesday IB Biology - Today you should work on your mesocosm construction. I will be photographing your plants on Friday when they will be sealed forever!!!! Once you have completed this I want you to complete (with your partner) the DBQ from pages 394 and 396. These will be due to me by tomorrow. Please do not just copy these I will be quizzing you on these. Biology - Today you set up your plants today with the sub. We'll weigh these plants first thing tomorrow so we can gauge biomass after two weeks. The most important thing is that you have your write-up submitted to me tomorrow. This write up should tell me why you chose the depth of seed, soil choice, watering, light requirements, and anything else they think will help. OH, and yes, you can name your plants! This will be turned into me tomorrow. When you finished with your plant, you should work on this article (https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2016/07/160730154602.htm) in a new entry in your notebook. On the right hand side you should use Get Curious and Ask Questions on the article. When your reading strategy asks you about "What this reminds you of" be sure to think about climate change, fossil fuels, power plants, how this might change daily life, etc. Honors Biology - You are just like my regular bio class, check it out. Everything is due tomorrow. Thursday IB Biology - Today we were lucky enough to hear from Dr. Kurth today about the Hep A outbreak in San Diego and how vaccinations can help with that. Tomorrow you will seal your mesocosms and take a quiz on 8.1, 8.2, and 8.3. Many of you have been freaking out on this so please check out this website and go to the IB HL content and review what you should know. http://www.mrgscience.com/topic-8-metabolism-cell-respiration-and-photosynthesis.html Biology - Today you did your initial weigh in on your plants to see if you really know what a plant needs to grow big and strong. Tomorrow you will be required to write about the demo we had on Monday where the beaker with water, baking soda, and light rose the fastest. Honors Biology - Today you guys got to hear from Dr. Kurth about the Hepatitis A outbreak here in San Diego as well as the importance of vaccinations. Tomorrow you will need to explain the demonstration we did on Monday. Please be sure you know! In addition, you should also have a good idea of how this connects with health. Think about the article. Friday IB Biology - Today we spent a good chunk of time reviewing for the quiz on metabolism after sealing up our mesocosms. I want to take a moment to share a couple observations with you as we head towards finals. Observation one, rarely do we have anyone ask questions in class. Why is that? Well, we've discussed this before, and it's mostly because you don't like being wrong. Take a risk and lead the way for others and all the while gain better understanding for yourself. Observation number two, all of you are acutely worried about not having the highest grade, but many of you don't really work very hard, utilize your class time well, nor come see me during my available times. To really get good grades you need to shift your focus from the grade to the subject. Seek to understand, and once you do, the rest of it is easy. You cannot expect an A without really concentrating on the subject. The last thing I'll leave you with is that your depth of understanding is often times proportional to your time of immersion. I took many classes in college on the very topics we're learning about and was a good little "monkey" memorizing lots of information, but I didn't get it until I spent time really struggling to understand it, it's then that the light bulb flashed on! I know you are all amazing wonderful students. I get it, but at some point there is a place where your natural gifts find their limits. Could this be one of those places? Use me, work hard, seek to understand, and the grades will be as good as you like. Biology - Today we spent a little bit of time taking care of our plants, but a lot of time reviewing for our test on photosynthesis. You spent the remainder of the day working on explaining the factors that went into the leaf demo we saw on Monday. Most of you did a VERY good job. Why can't you do that with everything?!!! There is no homework. Next week will be the last week where I introduce new material and then we're off to finals review and finals! Honors Biology - Today you started by getting a weigh in on your plant experiments. This will give us a baseline weight so that we can see how much biomass you can gain under the conditions you set for your plant. Then we reviewed for the test on photosynthesis and when you took, most of you looked really amazing. Good job. rest this weekend as next week and the one after that we'll be learning only a little bit more info and doing a whole lot of review on the topics as well as medical practices!
