SENIORS!!!! Grossmont Healthcare District offers two senior scholarships for each site each year to East County schools for students pursuing a career in the medical field! Complete the Google form application by clicking this link: GHD Scholarship 2019
The application is also accessible on the GHD Health Careers Pathways website at this link - GHD Health Career Pathways website The application is now open and the deadline for students to apply is January 9, 2019 at 5:00 p.m. Monday IB Biology - Today we spent our time reviewing a few labs to make sure we are on track with the expectations. The big lessons that we pull out of today's discussions are be accurate and precise about your writing, be precise about your use of data in answering your research questions, and of course, make sure you understand the all-important "Why" of your research. Don't just report, ANALYZE! This final lab will be due on Wednesday. Honors Biology - Today we addressed all of the questions you might still have about the final assessment/case study. You then had time to get into it in class and ask individual questions of me. Unfortunately a chunk of you didn't use this time very well, but the final product is not due until Wednesday. In addition to working on your case study (typed), you should also get your parent input signed !!! You have 5 days, get it done!! Tuesday IB Biology - While tomorrow is when your revised plant lab is due, today we started the conversation on your IA. Remember that your three approaches can be wet lab research, data based research, of simulation based research. The two sites that we used were https://www.mrgscience.com/ib-biology-internal-assessment.html http://www.nuffieldfoundation.org/practical-biology/health-and-disease You should have been able to pick up some good idea, but remember that this is about YOU. You should find something that really makes you wonder. Come prepared tomorrow with a good idea of what you would like to do for your IA. ...along with a finished plant lab. Oh, BTW when you come in tomorrow we'll be looking for your data, your processing of it, your validity test, and the big "Why should we care?" Make sure you have it. Honors Biology - Today was purely a day to work on your case study. This is a chance to shine and tomorrow it will be put together at the beginning of class, but remember the work should be done when you get to class. Please type any text that you use and have it printed. I will not print any of your work tomorrow. When we are done putting your case studies together you will get a chance to view other peoples work and critique it. Yes, you will have all of the 7 parts, but what will set you apart is the clarity of your writing, the connections in your reflections (in other words how you connect this material to your life), and your reflection on your learning about genetics. OH, and don't forget that the parent input is due!!! Get it done tonight if you can. Wednesday IB Biology - Today we spent our time discussing the various initial ideas that we are generating for our IAs. You did a great job of sort and refining ideas to really get at a testable question and I feel like you are all on the right track. Tonight what I need you to do is to really put together a rough IA in concept so that you can question each other again tomorrow so we have a solid product for the rest of our work time which cannot be monitored by me. Please come prepared with your questions tomorrow. Honors Biology - Today I learned that some of you are not good with tape or glue! Ha Ha! Actually you took a bit longer than I thought putting your unit case study together, but what I have seen looks great! We then started talking about our final! So, for the final you will need to do 2 things: 1) do a written assignment that requires no preparation on your part, and 2) create a game that is geared towards teaching middle school students about our big ideas from the semester. Your game can take any form, but must teach ALL of the detailed content from any three big ideas. How deep you ask? Just look inside your notebook! If you want a maximum score, I want you to create an amazingly fun game that includes deep content from four or more big ideas. You will have three days in class to prepare your material and then 1 hour on finals day to put it all together. Here are the “Big Idea” questions from the semester
Thursday IB Biology - Today was the last day for refining of your IA question. Tomorrow I will only propose things to you to think about, but you will need to construct this experiment on your own. On another note, I am super happy about the last test! Most of you did very well and I'm excited for you. We are really starting to "get it" when it comes to doing Biology the IB way! Honors Biology - Today we clarified the game final concept we started yesterday. Now, while yesterday was about which of the "big Idea" questions you wanted to incorporate, tonight will be about gathering all of the facts that you should include. Tomorrow I will be checking on these. Please write this information on the entry for your final game. OH! Parent Input?! Tomorrow is your LAST CHANCE to turn it in. Don't forget! ALL STUDENTS: If you have time, please complete the following survey as part of an internal assessment for an IB Biology student. The more data she can collect, the better her data will be: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSe-VqA5GlPV5xKgmmnOtyIUexb2THvDvmy1zE7gb41p0X9BVA/viewform?vc=0&c=0&w=1 Friday IB Biology - Today we took a look at your reviewed work on your photosynthesis labs. I'm really happy the direction we are moving. Your thought process is really improving! ...but there are some smaller issues still happening. Good thing is that I let you learn from your mistakes. Re-dos will be due on Finals morning if you choose to do it. Otherwise, I need you to be prepared with the next steps of your lab on Monday. You should have some procedures at this point, which means you could start testing. One last thing, On finals day a large portion of your score will rely on you ability to bring delicious food. If you need to shop this weekend, do so. I will be. Honors Biology - Today was a somewhat productive day in that many of you did work hard, but others, not so much. The only thing I noticed today was that some of you are so into making a game you are forgetting to include all of the information that is required for your game. Remember that this is not about giving a simple answer to the big question, because there are no simple answers to those. You need to teach your players all of the facts and info so they can understand the details. Monday will be your last chance to ask me game questions, but not science questions. This is your final, don't procrastinate.
