classwork/Homework
Monday IB Biology - Today you will watch the video, "A Shot to Save the World" ...actually on YouTube it's named something different. Here's the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gE4ef0yQZRU This movie is the story of the Polio Vaccination and the many factors that play a role in wiping out a disease. After watching this movie, I want you to consider your chosen disease and respond to the following: What is the vaccination development state for your disease? In other words, are they working on one? Who is it that this actually working on it? What are the impediments: biologically, social policy, geophysically, government infrastructures to developing a vaccine, etc. for your disease? What is/are the real issue(s) that holds us back? If you were the “Boss of Everything” what would you do to solve this? ...Be realistic in that money and convincing people are important. You will be submitting this to me when I return. Lastly, please make sure that you are prepared with the IA design you should have completed at this point. Tomorrow will be an in depth reflection. Honors Biology - So last week you learned all about this very important topic of cellular division. For the start of this week you are going to extend the idea that things can go wrong by looking at cancer. Today you will pick a cancer type. The type you select to study can NOT be the same type as any of the other people in your lab group. The list you can pick from is the following: Prostate, Breast, Ovarian, Cervical, Colon, Skin, Stomach, Lung, Brain, and Pancreatic. Please consider selecting one of the gender related cancers as they are somewhat common. What you need to do with it is create an informational trifold pamphlet (sample https://www.pixeden.com/brochure-templates/agentia-tri-fold-brochure-template) that includes the follow information: The Causes, Symptoms, Detection (Including indicators), Prevention, Treatments, and Survival Statistics. Lastly, make sure there is a place for citing your sources. In science we use APA format and you can find help on how to do this if you use my website Resource page. ALL of this info should be collected on the right hand side of a new entry in your notebook! No pamphlet until you find it all. You can get this done in class today! Yes, it should be colored! Yes, you can use your computer! No, you don't have to use the computer! No, you can't cut and paste information. Start the project today, but it will be due by Thursday so don't waste any time! Tuesday IB Biology - Today we were able to discuss some of the ramifications of the development of the polio vaccine by Jonas Salk. I think the coolest thing is that he didn't patent the vaccine so that it could be as widely distributed as possible. This is what I call an American hero!!! Next we discussed all of the fantastic tips that I gathered at the IB conference this weekend. Tonight I want you to watch this short video and to apply the five concepts (Adaption, Overproduction of offspring, Differential survival, reproduction,Inheritance) you have been learning about in your text book on 5.1 and 5.2. This can be a very short piece of work bullet pointing each of the ideas. The movie can be found here: http://www.hhmi.org/biointeractive/origin-species-beak-finch Honors Biology - Today we started by discussing the results of your test on Mitosis. Most of you did okay, but I think we all now know how we can be better. We must be able to think deeply about the materials. Next we discussed the requirements for your cancer research and why it is important! Do you remember why this is important to what we are studying? Then we discussed how to obtain the maximum score on this pamphlet project by adding appropriate related information. This project will be due on Thursday Lastly, tonight I want you to watch this video: https://www.ted.com/talks/paula_hammond_a_new_superweapon_in_the_fight_against_cancer On the right hand side of A NEW ENTRY, please respond to the following questions related to the movie: What does she mean when she talks about Supervillains vs superheros? Be specific and describe why this analogy works, or doesn't. Is there another analogy that you think would be better? What makes her drug delivery system so special? Please answer this by making a drawing of the delivery system. On the left hand side of the entry I want you to look at the reference page I gave you two weeks ago called Process, Process, Process. On this page there is a task called , make a mini movie poster. Please complete this and be ready to share tomorrow. EXTRA CREDIT OPPORTUNITY: It’s that time again! Expanding Your Horizons (EYH) is a non-profit annual conference aimed to interest girls(guys can not attend), in grades 9th - 10th, in science, math, engineering, and technology (STEM). Over the past decade, the San Diego chapter of EYH has introduced thousands of young girls to exciting STEM careers. Our conference offers hands-on workshops and activities organized by some of San Diego’s best and brightest professionals in STEM industries. To excite and prepare students for college life, it is hosted at the University of San Diego (USD). Our ultimate goal is to motivate girls to become innovative and creative thinkers ready to meet 21st century challenges. Parents are also encouraged to attend their own workshops that focus on college applications, financial aid, etc. Student and parent registration is now open! Please visit: www.EYHSanDiego.org Fee waivers are available for those who request them during the application process. This year’s conference is on Saturday, March 10, 2018, hosted at the University of San Diego. Wednesday IB Biology - Today we started the day by looking at what you had produced on the map projections for WNV. You all did a nice job of recognizing that climate is the one common factor that affects them all. Then we spent the rest of the time making sure we are ready for the quiz that will be tomorrow! DO you know the evidence for evolution? Do you know the five tenants of natural selection? Can you apply them? The unit test on all of these will be early next week. For the next couple of days, we'll be focusing on the IA development and completing an activity on natural selection. Honors Biology - Today we started by looking at your fantastic mini movie posters about the new superweapon used to deliver cancer treatments. next we tackled the big question of, "If mitosis is used to replicate cells, and cells must have complete instructions to work, then every cell must have a complete set of chromosomes. So, since this is true how is it possible to have a baby without it having double the needed chromosomes?!!!" You came up with brilliant questions that we will pursue later and deepen our knowledge of cellular replication, but for tonight I want you to just finish that tri-fold pamphlet! Thursday IB Biology - Today we started by reviewing for the evolution and natural selection quiz. Then we took the test. One class did very well and the other class scores were bi-modal meaning people either do the work or don't. If you fall into the don't category I want to help you. Don't lose out! After the test we then focused on providing me with materials lists for your IA. We start this next week and you really don't have time to lag on this. please be sure you are writing up all of the parts we've assigned so far. The idea is that next week we'll collect data, process it, and then the following week we'll conclude and evaluate. Please be prepared. Honors Biology - Today you ahd a chance to see the work from your other lab mates as well as a chance to see the other groups. You then isolated the commonalities you saw in causes (carcinogens). Lastly you self-evaluated for my aides and I to give you a final score. The homework for tonight will be to come in as an expert for the few questions your group assigned you. These were the questions you created yesterday. Your responses should be recorded on the right hand side of your entry. We'll use the left side of the entry for something tomorrow. Honors and IB HL Extra Credit Opportunity!!! The following website simulation is available to you. It will take about 2.5 hours but you can save your progress. When you are complete you will have an opportunity to print out a completion sheet that the program will give you. Bring that to me along with a screen shot of your work from each of the four modules and I'll give you BIG extra credit. http://www.hhmi.org/biointeractive/lizard-evolution-virtual-lab Friday IB Biology - Today we reviewed your responses to the quiz we took yesterday and found one problem! ....yes, I have adjusted your grades. Then we played predator and prey to collect data. We didn't get through it all so we'll pick that up next week. The really important thing that we must be prepared for is IA experimentation on Monday. Make sure your method is ROCK SOLID! This means that you should have reviewed the exemplar I posted earlier this week and to make sure you are just as clear and focused! Do not slack!!!! Honors Biology - Today we began by looking at the similarities in causes you identified from yesterday's work. It turns out that exposure to carcinogens in any form (smoke, foods, etc.), as well as high energy, increase our odds of cancers. We then got into lab groups and discussed our research about chromosomes and babies. Then you got into expert groups to discuss nuances about the material, and finally started to formulate an idea for how this might be possible. Since we didn't finish the process we'll just pick it up on Monday. No homework!!!
