classwork/Homework
Monday IB Biology - So at this point you have completed a portion of your IA. I will continue to have periodic peer checks where I will arrange for you to critique your classmates and get feedback. In fact we will look at what data you have on Wednesday. It looks like this research should be complete by the beginning of the 3rd week in February. While we aren't totally done with our evolution and natural selection concepts, I'm going to ask you today to work on the beginning of our next (and final) unit on ecology. Today you will self-organizer into groups of 3-5 people. Do NOT be less than 3 people, and take in "lost souls" who have not found a group. Your task today is to produce a written document that describes the best way to: 1) Describe the components of the environment (biotic and abiotic) of Granite Hills High School 2) Provides a system for organizing the various components of GHHS. You will probably need to walk around campus a bit to see what is there and then brainstorm a succinct way of describing what you see. You will be scored on how efficiently (simple but effective)you can do this without missing anything. For example, If I were describing my home, I might start with a simple list of everything I see (biotic and abiotic) Ex. Broken couch, house with no roof, rain coming in, cockroaches, rats, me, weeds, mold, etc. But then, how could I classify these components into groups that would help me describe the relationship between these components? Ex. furniture, buildings, fungi, etc. This is due at the end of the period so work quickly. Tonight I want you to look at pages 258 and 259 of your book. There are two big ideas here, please summarize these 2 big ideas in 20 words (Total) or less. This will be submitted tomorrow. Honors Biology - So this last week we discovered that there is a natural evolutionary process that could be in play in our case study on Addie. Today you will be completing a POGIL on evolution and selection. As you pass in your graph, you will receive the POGIL packet from your substitute teacher. You may chat with one partner, but this is NOT a group project. It is worth points to your grade and you must complete ALL of the questions to get any credit. Do not skip anything. It is due tomorrow so don't waste time. I guess I should make you aware that when you turn it in tomorrow, I will ask you one other question that you will respond to, it is the BIG question, so make sure you think about how all of this pertains to Addie's condition. Tuesday IB Biology - Today we started to close out our understanding of evolution and started to attach this to the idea of how it created such biodiversity. We will finish your posters tomorrow, but you will only have a small amount of time to do that. We will be starting a small project that goes along with classification. Please read page 265 on Dichotomous Keys, and then complete the work on 266 and 267. As an option you may want to: Watch this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wpKulkADzBk Also, if you are curious: https://youtu.be/r5yw9S3X7m4 Rady's Children's hospital has some opportunities in case you are interested. See the file attachment below. Honors Biology - Today we watched Addie's case again and attached it to the work you did with the POGIL from yesterday. I'll get those scores in as soon as I can. In the meantime, we will be learning about this concept of evolution. Tonight I need you to watch the following video: https://www.theatlantic.com/science/archive/2016/09/stunning-videos-of-evolution-in-action/499136/ You will need to know what happened for tomorrow. ...you may have a quiz on it. If you are curious: https://youtu.be/r5yw9S3X7m4 Wednesday IB Biology - Today we started with finishing your evolution movie poster and tonight I would like you to read and respond to the TOK on page 263 on scientific consensus using the following Google Form: https://forms.gle/w4RzG4CW4Bis8uVf6 . Tomorrow we will discuss this topic. In addition to the above work, please come with some of your IA data. Have you graphed it? Do you have a test of the validity? Be ready to show what you have at this point. Doesn't have to be perfect. If you are interested in getting an essay published in an undergrad journal at UCSD, check out the flyers I've placed below. Honors Biology - Today we started by putting our graphs of bacterial growth vs antibiotic use in our notebooks. Then we looked at the video from last night and discussed the positive and negative qualities of the experiment. Then I forgot to give you the short quiz. Tonight, using the four colors we used today I want you to make a graphic organizer (a picture that shows relationships) of the four concepts that contribute to evolution. This should be a graphical representation on the left side of your entry from today. It should use color throughout. It should make sense. Ex. Time might surround all of the other three concepts. Or maybe you use a circular structure of all four. Maybe it's a pyramid with one of the qualities at the base. Regardless, it MUST communicate the relationship between the concepts. You may add writing, but it must be graphic! PS Do not ask me what to do. You need to think deeply about the connection these concepts hold with each other. We will go over this tomorrow with other classmates. Thursday IB Biology - Today we discussed classification, and your IA data analysis. We then went into working on your fastener classification system. You will be finishing this tomorrow. Tonight you should be polishing your IA data, accounting for uncertainty in your measurements, and running a test of validity. This is the only thing you must do tonight. Please do it as we will be working on your evaluations on Monday! Your fastener naming system will continue tomorrow, but know that it should have a naming system that will individually distinguish each fastener. You could place the dichotomous key on one side, and maye the fastener with its name on the back. As you work on each differentiating factor for grouping, you should be making a name for each group. We'll work on it tomorrow, but that caused some confusion. You need both. In the meantime, please help a fellow student with some survey information for their IA by clicking this link and answering some simple questions: https://forms.gle/pNuwYAXaHe4CRNWGA If for some reason you are still working on your poster here's what you need to know: Your movie poster that will have…
Honors Biology - Today was a bit of a loss since so many people were out for MUN, but at least we got to explore some surgery. When we do our rat dissections in late February we will conclude by suturing them up and so I thought this might be an interesting way to spend our day on "Touch Surgery" I will be checking your graphic organizers from yesterday, tomorrow. You get an extra day, but I want you to make them extra good by adding a brief description at the bottom that explains why you made the G.O. the way you did. Please help a fellow student with some survey information by clicking this link and answering some simple questions: https://forms.gle/pNuwYAXaHe4CRNWGA Friday IB Biology - SO you finished the concept of classification. Not as easy as it seems. Imagine doing that for thousands of species! This weekend I have three goals for you. 1) work on your evaluation on your IA. We will be looking at these, like we have at all components, this coming week. And 2) I want you to think about the most amazing organisms (fungi, plants, protozoans, animals, etc.) on the planet and find 3 that are your absolute favorite. Come prepared with a basic understanding of these. Lastly, 3) please read the basic idea of 5.4. You need to have a basic understanding of cladistics. You should know what they are, how they work for reclassifying things, and make note of the figwort family example. Honors Biology - So today we discussed your possible future with the medical pathway and then tried to look for evidence of evolution. There are a lot of sources of evidence! This weekend you are to find out what speciation is and how can speciation occur. You should also include an example. A real one would be great. This should all be done on the left hand side.
