Monday IB Biology - Today our goal is to take the natural selection data (IB Data posted below) and to analyze this data in as many ways as possible in order to understand the data as well as to decide it's validity. To do this you need to do some processing of the numbers. First, decide what kind of graph is most appropriate. Secondly, you need to pick the appropriate statistical tasks are appropriate. You need to consider: Standard Deviation, Standard Error, the inclusion of error bars, T-Tests, and the Chi-Squared test at a minimum. If any of these do not apply, please discuss why. This is worth 5 points to your grade and is done as a group and is due on Wednesday as a document that is shared with me. Here are some resources for you... We analyzed the article to figure out how much validity it had and you guys came up with a lot! Then we transitioned to the movie from Friday which went through the entire process of fertilization and development. Keeping in mind we are still trying to figure out the Triplet Issue, we then looked at how fertilization is prevented through the forms of contraception. The conversations were really quite solid! There is no homework so enjoy your time tonight. Tomorrow I will have a substitute so be sure to check here (or rather on tomorrow's section) for all of your instructions on what to do. Tuesday IB Biology - Please remember that your groups will be turning in your data processing of the natural selection data by sharing it with me BEFORE MIDNIGHT!!!! All of your resources can be found on Monday, or below. Honors Biology - First off, do not lose sight of why we are doing all of this. We're trying to figure out if any of this has to do with our triplet scenario or in our personal lives. Today, on left of the entry from Friday: Make the time line from top to bottom, with the top being the moment of conception when an egg and sperm combine, to the bottom being when the baby is born. Using the websites provided, please list the benchmarks (most important things we should know) for each month and trimester. You should include what the baby is doing in it's development, but also what the mother might expect. Color code these so we can know the difference. You must include the terms Zygote, Embryo, and Fetus at a bare minimum. Yes, this must all fit on the left hand page of your notes from Friday so plan carefully!!!! And what is the role of Mitosis and Meiosis in this process? You should be ready to answer these questions when I return tomorrow. What you don't finish in class you must complete as homework. Wednesday IB Biology - Today we looked at the work that you did. Some looked great, but most of it reflected little effort. What I took from your work was that the statistical tests we choose are really dependent on what we are looking at in the data set and how our research question is framed. As I promised, I am going to find a more visual way of representing the Chi-Squared test in relation to the T-Test. Tonight you should be processing your data from your experimentation. Honors Biology - Today you figured out the first few sections of the triplet problem!!!! You learned that it is possible for a woman to double ovulate, and that one egg could have split after fertilization. We now know that it is possible! Yes! You also were reminded that Meiosis is used for to make the sex cells, but Mitosis is used to actually build the child. We then finished looking at contraception methods as well as began the discussion on Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs). Since we didn't finish this lovely discussion, there is no homework tonight. Today you were assigned a chapter that you will be responsible for in the coming weeks. I will be assisting you as you prepare, but I need you to take charge. You must include the following: All concepts of the chapter. Have at least one STRONG connects with a past chapter. A DBQ question of YOUR DESIGN for the class. You should have created a "Big Idea" summary. Fits into one period. 3 multiple choice questions for an end of week quiz. Honors Biology - Today we finished the STI information. Could any of this have to do with the triplets??!!! Probably not. On that topic, know that you have an initial quiz about this tomorrow! Please make sure you know, as it pertains to the triplet dilemma, what role mitosis plays, how meiosis could provide differences, how fertilization played a role in development. In addition, I also need you to rank the STI's from worst to least worst on the left hand page of that entry. I'll be checking this when you are taking your quiz tomorrow. The big ideas really revolved around Measurement with SI units, Cellular structure, and differences between multi-cellular and unicellular organisms. The rest of the time was spent working with our partners on the unit chapter you are responsible for. remember, that I am your partner, but you are responsible for the items I have listed above on Thursday. We will start these presentations on Wednesday of next week. Honors Biology - Today we started with taking a quiz on our current big question. You are amazing at putting the pieces together! Well done! We then took our last chance to ask any last minute questions on our sexual education topics. For tonight's homework I need you to watch the following video. It's very short, but has some important information I want you to know because it relates to growth and development of organisms. So what you'll do is start a new entry. When you are done watching the video you will then answer the "Think" portion of the website. The questions and answers should be written on the right side of your entry. On the left side of the entry I want you to make a diagram that shows the differences between multipotent and pluripotent cells, and induced pluripotent cells.
