classwork/Homework
Monday IB Biology - Today many of you in period 2 submitted your mesocosms plan with details on how you would balance the CO2 and O2 in the system. Tomorrow you will seal these projects and we'll start to observe them. All observations can be made on an attached sheet that you create. IN the end it should be a CLEAR story of what you did, why you did it, and what actually happened! Many of you who were not quite ready should be well coordinated tomorrow because I will also be preparing you for the exam on Wednesday. As to this exam, you need to do your part. I would suggest that you go through your flashcards, and the chapter, but I would also suggest that you go through the DBQs. As a final piece of your homework, please answer the following on a seperate piece of paper that is ready to be turned in. Your question is: If species can evolve to adjust for changes, can ecosystems evolve in the same way? What kind of emergent properties show up with an ecosystem? Emergent properties are when the end product is greater than the sum of its parts. Ex. Like when you put all of the macromolecules in a system, we end up with life (a cell), or you put a bunch of specialized cells together and get an organism that can think about itself, etc. Hey seniors, there's another scholarship opportunity available to you. See the flyers attached below. Honors Biology - After last week we realized that sexual activity is more than just a physical act, that what it really comes down to is relationships, or the psycho-social aspects of our lives, and so it's a pretty serious topic. The result of early sexual activity are pretty serious as well. One of those potential outcomes we looked at today was some of the sexually transmitted infections. We made observations of the symptoms and discussed them. Tonight I want you to select an STI that you think is most interesting and to create "one pager" on the left side of your entry from today. The instructions can be found in your notebook reference pages. Partially completed projects will be worth no points. Tuesday IB Biology - SO today was dedicated to achieving two goals: 1) mesocosms recorded and sealed, and 2) doing a review for the test. Unfortunately I continue to get people not turning, or turning work in late! I'm giving zeroes out, so please be careful to do what you should be doing. Obviously I need you to prepare for the exam tomorrow, but also know that starting Thursday we will be starting our plant unit, which is an HL unit, and you will still need soils, planters, etc. to start the growing race so start thinking. ...or maybe just leave some stuff for your mesocosm. Without fail the growing race will begin on Thursday. If you are not there, or late, it is what it is. Honors Biology - Today we focused in on the work from yesterday to look at HIV in more detail. We discussed it's origins, it's spread, and the current battle, as well as the dangerous combinations of body fluid and body parts. Tonight I want you to create a visual analogy for HIV and how it attacks and eludes the immune system. If you remember in class, I said it was like a bank robber who could change what he/she looked like. What do you think is a better analogy? Be sure to include at least 2 colorful pictures. Wednesday IB Biology - So today we spent the time we had taking our unit 4 test!!! This is the second to last unit that you need to complete! The end is near, and I know that for many of you, this is a good thing. The burn out is really starting to show. Yet, there is one thing sure to make anyone feel better and that is getting into nature! Starting tomorrow we will be starting a plant growing race. You should bring in a planter, some soil, maybe fertilizer, or ???. You will be racing against other plant growers so whatever you chose is entirely up to you. Tonight you should probably find out some information on how to germinate seeds quickly. We will be working with Beefsteak Tomato, Blue Lake Stringless Garden Bean, and Sugar Daddy Pea. In case you are interested, here is a short COVID-19 video from NOVA: https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/video/coronavirus-covid19/ Honors Biology - Today we thought about all of the reasons to say to sex at this age, but we know that someday your will keep my job secure by having children! Planning to have children is the best way to go about doing that, and contraception is a helpful tool. I would love for you to take tonight to get caught up with your parent on everything we've talked about so far. That's it! In case you are interested, here is a short COVID-19 video from NOVA: https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/video/coronavirus-covid19/ Thursday IB Biology - Today we got to watch the super illustrious BiPPA awards on plants! I hope you'll be as excited about plants as a I am, they are a AMAZING organisms! Today you selected your favorite partner and you should have devised your plan for the plant growing race! Make sure you have all of those materials ready for tomorrow for the start of the race! In addition, you will have an opportunity to revise your mesocosm tomorrow, so you may want to have materials/organisms hand for that as well. Lastly, I need you to preview the chapters you are responsible for with your partner. 9.1 Xylem, 9.2 Phloem, 9.3 Growth, and 9.4 Reproduction. As you look at these sections, please make flashcards for all of the new vocabulary in the section to share with your partner tomorrow. Honors Biology - Today we finished up the questions that you guys have had. Next we discussed how someday you probably will have children. Of course, it's okay if you don't, but I want you to know what pregnancy entails. So you drew three columns on a new entry. The 1st column is months (0-9). The 2nd column is where you will note important fetal developments using the following website https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/articles/7247-fetal-development-stages-of-growth And the 3rd column is for additional info. like the size of baby, reactivity, mom’s feeling, trimester, etc. LASTLY, GO HUG YOUR MOM (or whoever takes care of you) FOR A LONG TIME UNTIL SHE ASKS YOU WHAT YOUR PROBLEM IS. ...then just say, "I love you!" and walk away. They will love it, but be confused too. Tell me about it tomorrow. Friday IB Biology - Well, I know I gave you some ideas about how we could still continue to learn over these two weeks, but I believe I am wrong on a number of points. After school today I attended a meeting that clarified a lot of things. Most importantly, due to the stresses on families during this time, teachers are not authorized to assign any work that can affect a grade, but can give out supplemental/enrichment work. What this means for you is that our schedule to complete instruction is hampered. Things you should know: I will be posting on this website on Monday with suggested material to cover and is an suggested format, all from chapter 9. While this isn't exactly worth "Points" it may be worth extra credit to your grade. You should also know that your plants are going to die in class if you haven't picked yours up. If you need to pick up your plants, please contact me and we can probably arrange a pick up time. We were going to follow their growth, but I think we'll just see who the champ is when we return. Lastly, know that your mesocosms will stay in the classroom on the top shelf. We will analyze these when we return.
