classwork/Homework
First, before I talk about anything I'd like to lend you some advice during this break.
1) Establish a routine. Don't sleep until noon each day. Plan out activities for each day. 2) Eat well, and not all of the time. It's easy to eat all of the time by snacking. 3) Exercise. Spend an hour of your day with in-house and outside exercise. Go for a hike, ride our bike around town, or go for a run, but maintain the 6 foot safety barrier. There's also a lot of exercise videos on YouTube. 4) Enjoy your friends virtually instead of getting together in groups. Tik-Tok time! 5) DON'T get absorbed by the phone! Do some art, or write, or ...homework for class. IB Biology - Okay, so here's the deal. I have completed all of the IAs, as you know, but you should also know that within a few weeks your scores and some samples will be sent in to IB. They will be moderated by IB and you will get your final scores (eventually). I want you to know that the scores I gave you will be your final scores for my class, but IB will probably moderate this score downward as they are notoriously difficult. I'm just letting you know that they may be differences in how I score you and how IB scores you. While we wait to see how things will go in the next few weeks, I will also be doing the final grades on your unit 4 exam, and I should be able to get them done by the end of the week. So what would be beneficial before we get back together?! Well, this really puts us in a crunch for IB and AP testing, and I think our plant unit is at a loss without our class time and experiments. While I cannot require it, I would highly recommend you go into chapter 9 and get to know the material. If I was doing it, I would do all of the DBQs found in 9.1-9.4. Do a chapter every other day. You should really know xylem and phloem tissue, lignan rings, auxins, etc. Oh, you should also know reproduction (Sorry, no flower dissection as I had planned) and growth from a hormone standpoint, but also structural (apical meristems, etc.). There are many websites on the web that can help like bioninja, but feel free to email me with questions. Here's a few great online resources for plants: https://www.coursera.org/courses?query=plants and https://www.khanacademy.org/search?referer=%2F&page_search_query=plants I may post updated information as things change so check back here for more information next Monday. Biology - So, we know that these next two weeks are going to be work free...sort of. What I am posting here could be worth some extra credit to you, but regardless will get you ahead of the game when we return. So, what you don't know is that everyone in class is required to do a community health service project. Last year this was made in the form of websites that were meant to inform teens about health issues. Last year, they made sites on smoking/vaping dangers, on best make up, brushing your teeth, about mental illness, etc. They were a huge success and were all built online using Google Sites. I'm asking you, as you establish some new routines, to get ahead of the game and to create a website using Google Sites, but instead of making it about a public health topic, I want you to make it for body systems. What should it look like? Well, I think you might have a separate page for each of your top three body systems. You should have good detailed images, interesting facts, and it should cite other people's work. I know this sounds strange, but I would also try to find anatomical maps for the systems of a rat and include those as well.(you will need to demonstrate a system during the dissection). Eventually you will need to compare and contrast the rat with the human, and I think you will find they are very similar. This will all help because 1) you will be good to go when we finally get to the dissection, which you were all looking forward to, and 2) you will be super good at making websites which is what you have to do later in May. If you chose not to do these things, it's okay, but if you do, send me the URL and I'll give you feedback AND life will be MUCH easier for you later this year. Regardless, I hope you will follow my advice posted above, and I hope you will email me some of your sites. Email if you have questions. Oh, and since I'm going to miss you guys, I'd like to say "Shut up, Reid!," and "Collie you have 5 minutes." ...Makes me feel a little bit more like a normal week.
