IB BIOLOGY: AP Test on Monday!
Last week we looked at biological processes that rely, like all processes, on chemistry. There was a ton of "Cut-and-Paste" so I'm not sure how much was learned, but this work was meant as a review of common biochemical processes, and to a lesser extent as a review of the cellular processes, although I know that it may not have seemed this way. While I had hoped that everyone would complete this task, actually only about ⅓ of you did so I will be changing plans this week. For this week, regardless of whether you are taking the AP Biology test or not, we will only focus on preparation for the AP exam. Working on this material will help everyone in their collegiate futures, so please give it a try. This means that the work that you have done all year long with DBQ’s, and your work on formal experimentation and communication, should help you quite a bit, but it is the details of explaining topics is what I worry about. Some of the content that could possibly show up on the exam could have been learned as long ago as the first semester of your junior year! So, this week I am going to ask you to take a practice exam, review the practice exam, and then spend time on Khan Academy’s AP Bio UNITS to get the refreshers we all need. FIRST, PRACTICE AND CHALLENGE: Complete the following AP exam practice questions on a Google Doc. This part will take only a little bit over an hour, and it is really important to know that the test is designed in a way that it is unlikely that you can complete it in the time that you are given, so do not feel like you should have everything done on the exam. That is not the expectation for a high score. I will take a look for any glaring problems with your work, but for the most part, what you hear in the video should inform you of your successes and mistakes. Put those on your document in purple. When it asks for your name/ID, please just use your last name so I know who you are and not just your student ID. When you get there, you should find that I have already opened assignments for you, but don’t do these yet. First, challenge yourself by going here https://www.khanacademy.org/science/ap-biology#ap-biology-subject-challenge and completing the AP Biology course challenge. PRACTICE CONTENT YOU ARE WEAK IN: Now that you have twice challenged yourself and reflected on your own learning, it is time to start reviewing the material that you feel weakest with. Now that you know what you are good at and not so good at, go back to your KA account and complete the course mastery for any or all of the following units, which is the only content the AP exam might cover this year:
I had planned for you to use your classmates websites to help you, but so few were completed, I'm not sure it will be helpful. If you are working to raise your grade this week, I am looking for you to challenge yourself on both the practice and at Khan Academy. I have assigned all of the content possible for the test, and you don’t have to do all 6, but you should attack at least 2 units. My expectation is not that you are perfect, but that you get better. I will be given complete reports on your work by Khan Academy so make sure it reflects a real effort. One last note, remember, regardless of whether you are, or are not, taking the exam, I want you to do all of this work so that you will get a realistic view of the work you are currently capable of. No one, I repeat NO ONE, will be perfect. Just focus on improving on your weak points, not on covering everything. GOOD LUCK TO ALL OF OUR TEST TAKERS ON MONDAY! Like what we have done so far, it will also be web based. Biology and Community Health: How Places Change Over Time. Last week you put a lot of work into understanding the role that abiotic materials play in an ecosystem, like water and carbon, but this week we will pull all of our ideas together to get the big picture about how change occurs to areas like your park. For the FINAL piece of this amazing website, I want you to watch this video on the Serengeti (about 40 minutes). It will bring together everything that you have learned in these last 3 weeks. https://www.biointeractive.org/classroom-resources/serengeti-natures-living-laboratory Now that you have watched this video you should be feeling fairly confident in what you need to know about ecology. I now want you to make a personal video that is no more than 3 minutes in length for the front page of your website. This video, which you should take on as the role of Park Superintendent (big boss), should be a way to inform, and entice, people to come visit. You may dress up, use researched accents in the way you talk, include your family, use props, etc. Your imagination is the only limit. Here are the minimum requirements that must be included:
